The band Five for Fighting sings a great song that goes “When you’ve only got a hundred years to live.” How will you fill those years? How will you finance those years? The answers to both of those questions tell a lot about you. They’re not the typical questions you’ll be asked by most financial planners, but they’re ones that you should ask yourself.
What is on your bucket list? Who is on your journey with you? What will you have to sacrifice in order to accomplish a goal? Once we know what it is we’re trying to accomplish – our purpose – it makes it much easier to remain motivated to achieve it, despite life’s little distractions and discouragements. Visualize an egg timer for your life and imagine what you need to accomplish, what you would like to accomplish and what you (mistakenly) believe you can never accomplish. The imaginary timer can help keep you on track…tick, tick, tick. Are you wasting, spending, saving, and/or investing your time, talent and resources?
